about

Rare Weather is a 45 minute single-track piece that is the latest work to come out of an ongoing experimental process by Paul H. Muller for the ordering of indeterminate music based on real-time Internet data. This is classic minimalism, with a strong driving beat and pulsating groove comprised of several layers and multiple voices. Rare Weather is a combination of conventional notated composition, indeterminate, modular structures and data gathered from the Internet to complete final realization.

Although this is one recording, there are hundreds of billions of possible permutations so that new versions can be created every few hours, accessible directly to listeners. The data used to create this particular instance of Rare Weather were taken from Weather Underground reports of 15 European cities and 15 cities in the Western Hemisphere. Temperature, humidity and wind velocity were used to set the order of the 24 modular sections that make up this music.

Rare Weather is part of an ongoing attempt to bring music composition into the networking age and to give the listener a unique experience on each hearing.
